The LAPD has arrested a suspect who brutally attacked a 62-year-old street vendor in Downtown Los Angeles.

The attack happened June 15 in the 700 block of Figueroa Street, where the victim, Arabelia Martinez, has sold hot dogs for years to support herself and her family.

Video that circulated online appeared to show a woman confronting Martinez, spraying sauce towards her cart. Martinez responded by throwing what appeared to be Tajín seasoning in the suspect’s direction, which escalated the conflict.

Martinez was then seen being shoved to the ground and struck multiple times, as witnesses looked on. Some can be seen attempting to intervene, but the assault continued for approximately a minute before coming to an end.

According to Martinez’s son, Constantino Garcia, the suspect approached his mother and attempted to intimidate her into giving her money. When she refused, Garcia said the woman became verbally abusive and made racist remarks before the situation escalated.

Garcia said his mother was complaining about pain to her head as a result of the attack.

Martinez’s family said in their statement that she is currently home resting and recovering and is overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness that the community has shown her.

“We are incredibly relieved to share that the individual who assaulted our mom is now in custody,” her family said in a statement. “We are deeply grateful to Detectives Roman and Aguirre of the LAPD, who have stood by our family every step of the way. We also want to thank the people of Los Angeles, and everyone around the world, for the incredible outpouring of love, prayers, and support.”

The suspect, who was arrested for felony battery, has not yet been identified by police.
