A Farmington man is dead following a high-speed chase Wednesday afternoon.

The chase began at around 2 p.m. when police responded to a call of a man driving recklessly on the 3500 block of East Main Street.

The subject, identified by Farmington police as 26-year-old John Robert Marszalek, fled the scene, hitting an unmarked police car in the process. A chase pursued but was called off due to heavy traffic in the area.

Marszalek drove past the city limits but eventually drove back into Farmington at the intersection of 20th and Butler, where he hit another police car.

Officers attempted to take Marszalek into custody, at which point he started injuring himself.

Officers shot Marszalek, and he was taken to San Juan Regional Medical Center. Marszalek later died from his injuries.
