A Shelby Police sergeant fatally shot a man Saturday night at the local Arby’s after investigators say he stabbed that same sergeant in the neck.

The sergeant, identified by the department as Noah Kocher, was released Sunday from Ohio Health Mansfield.

According to a release from the Shelby Police, the incident happened around 11:18 p.m. Saturday at the Arby’s on Mansfield Avenue.

Sgt. Kocher and Officer Dominic Ewing went there, according to police, in an attempt to serve a warrant to Tyler Jacobs, 30, from the Shelby Municipal Court.

When officers advised Jacobs of the warrant, police said he stabbed Kocher in the neck with a knife.

Police bodycam video released Sunday to 19 News shows the interaction between Sgt. Kocher and Jacobs.

In the video, the sergeant asks Jacobs, “Do you know why I’m here?” as Jacobs walks out of the kitchen into the dining area.

Kocher told Jacobs he has a warrant for failure to appear in court, and that’s when the video shows Jacobs stab the sergeant in the neck.

The next part of the video is shaky and hard to see.

According to the release, Kocher “was able to make physical distance” before Jacobs ran towards Kocher with the knife still in hand.

Kocher shot Jacobs moments later, according to police and the video.

Ewing, who according to police had been watching the back door, went inside the restaurant and gave first aid to both Kocher and Jacobs.

Police say Shelby Fire Department took both men to the hospital, where Jacobs later died.

Kocher received treatment at Ohio Health Mansfield, and police say he was released Sunday.

He is now on paid administrative leave, per department policy.

Shelby Municipal Court records show Jacobs was facing charges of fleeing and eluding as well as operating a bicycle with no lights.

The records state the 30-year-old failed to appear for his arraignment on Nov. 13, and the judge issued a warrant.

19 News also requested Kocher’s personnel file, but did not find any similar incidents listed.
