April 26, 2026, Columbus police officer attempted a traffic stop around 7:20 p.m. near Hamilton and Minnesota avenues. Police said the driver fled the stop, and the vehicle was located roughly 10 minutes later on East 18th Avenue. Officers later encountered the suspect two blocks south near East 16th and Hamilton avenues, where investigators say he opened fire on officers. According to Fraternal Order of Police Lodge President Brian Steel, one officer was struck twice and suffered massive blood loss after a round damaged his femoral artery. Officers immediately rendered aid on scene, applied a tourniquet, and transported him to the hospital for emergency surgery. He is expected to recover. The suspect, identified as Chantez Loury, was shot by multiple officers and pronounced dead at 8:43 p.m.
