Living in Malatya’s Yesilyurt district, local resident Ali Ozbay proclaimed that he hadn’t been paid his disability benefits in 5 years until just a month ago, but that he had debts and didn’t have anything to eat. He then proceeded to set himself on fire in front of the governor’s office on Wednesday.Telling the office attendants he had filed an application to the Yesilyurt Social Assistance Foundation to no avail and that his petition to the governor’s office had not elicited any response, Ozbay doused himself in gasoline then set himself on fire with a lighter.Soon after he tried to stop the flames by rolling on the ground, but when that didn’t work he took off his jacket. Nearby eyewitnesses rushed to his aid and put out the flames. Later an attendant from the governor’s office arrived with a fire extinguisher and finished the job. Burnt in several areas, Özbay lay in front of the governor’s office waiting for emergency personnel. At that point Governor Suleyman Kamcı came up to him and listened to his plight. The governor offered to provide financial assistance in exchange for Ozbay promising to never set fire to himself again. This is the second time Ozbay has set himself on fire, with a similar protest occurring on January 29, 2015 in front of the Yesilyurt District Governor’s Office. That time the flames had been put out earlier and he had suffered no burns.
