A man was shot dead at close range by a military police officer on Avenida Brasil, near Complexo da Maré, in the North Zone of Rio, this Thursday morning (8).

A video shows the moment when the PM appears to hit the man with the rifle and the gun fires , hitting him in the stomach ( see above; the images are strong ). The policeman leaves without providing assistance .

Jefferson de Araújo Costa was participating in a protest and, in the images, appears to be unarmed and did not attack the PM. A video shows him being helped by residents, unconscious and losing a lot of blood. He was taken to Getúlio Vargas Hospital, in Penha, but arrived dead at the scene.

Other videos show that Civil and Military Police vehicles passed by the scene without providing assistance to the young man, who was in agony for more than 10 minutes.

According to the PM, the police officer who fired the shot was identified and taken to the 21st DP (Bonsucesso). The agent's conduct will be investigated by the Corporation's Internal Affairs Department, with analysis of the images from the body camera he wore in his uniform . The name of the police officer was not released.

According to residents, the protest called for an end to the police operation.

The Military and Civil Police carry out emergency action in Maré. During the operation, two other residents were injured and were taken to Evandro Freire Hospital. They were shot in the leg and buttock, but are in stable health.
