A Michigan murder suspect was taken into custody after setting himself of fire in his car while surrounded by Akron officers, police confirmed.

Officers received numerous alerts late Sunday night into Monday morning from the Flock License Plate Reader on a blue Hyundai Tucson wanted in connection to a homicide in Wyandotte, Mich., Akron Police Department Public Information Officer, Capt. Michael Miller, stated.

Miller said officers spotted the Tucson heading eastbound on Copley Road just before 11 a.m. on Mar. 25.

Officers conducted a “high-risk traffic stop” in the parking lot of A&A Beauty Supply in the 1300 block of Copley Road, according to Miller.

Miller stated officers “cautiously” approached the Tucson at gunpoint and verbally commanded the 59-year-old driver, identified as the murder suspect, to turn the car off and drop the knife he had in his hand.

“Moments later, while still seated inside the vehicle, the suspect set himself on fire,” Miller described.

The suspect then jumped out of the car and was taken into custody, according to Miller.

Officers then used a fire extinguisher to put out the small flames that were still inside the car, said Miller.

Miller said EMS was immediately called to the scene to treat the suspect for his various burn injuries.
