The Bakersfield Police Department released video of an officer involved shooting that occurred in central Bakersfield in August.

The OIS left one man dad after officers shot him as he stabbed a woman several times.

On Aug. 13, 2021, BPD received reports of a man screaming the 200 block of Stephens Drive, south of Brundage Lane. Officer were not able to find anyone.

Later that morning at 8:47 AM, officer received another call in the same area about a peace disturbance between man and woman. It was reported the man was armed with a knife.

Officer responded and requested the mental health evaluation team. Officers arrived and the man and woman were inside an apartment. Officer attempted to speak with them at the door but they never came.

Officers observed the man from the outside and could see him with a knife during the disturbance.

At 10:06 AM, officers heard noises that lead the to believe the woman was endanger. Officers forced entry where the OIS occurred.

The woman suffered several wounds which were considered non life threatening. The man died at the scene and several knives were recovered by officers.

BPD said "while this investigation has moved to a point where it is practical to release this information, the matter is still under review."

The involved officers remain on modified duty pending a determination by the Chief of Police as to the appropriateness of their actions under state law and department policy, according to BPD.

The officers involved in the shooting are identified as Officer V. Swall, Officer M. Broida, and Senior Officer A. Garcia.

Senior Officer A. Garcia and Officer Swall have been an officers with the department for eight years. And Officer Broida has been an officer with the department for less than a year.

Chief of Police Greg Terry said, “The public has a legitimate interest in obtaining timely and accurate information about police shootings, and the Bakersfield Police Department is committed to making that information available. We will release the body worn camera footage of officers in critical incidents as soon as it is possible to do so without compromising an investigation. This is our commitment to accountability and professionalism.”
