A woman has been charged following an alleged hit-and-run in a North Tyneside supermarket car park.

Shortly after 1.15pm on Thursday, February 8, police received a report of a disturbance in Asda car park on Hadrian Road in Wallsend. Emergency services attended the scene where it was reported that a group of people had been involved in a verbal disagreement.

A security guard from the supermarket has then attempted to intervene when, for reasons yet to be established, they were struck by a car causing a serious leg injury. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been discharged.

The driver of the car has then left the scene before police arrived.

An investigation was immediately launched by officers, who later arrested a 36-year-old woman on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. Roxanne Louise Dale, 36, of Lambourne Avenue in Longbenton, has since been charged with a number of offences in connection with the report, and appeared before magistrates in Newcastle on Saturday.

Dale was charged with dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, sending a letter of communication causing anxiety/distress, and failing to stop after an accident. She was remanded in custody ahead of her next appearance scheduled for next month.

Northumbria Police said that officers are aware of footage of the alleged incident circulating online, including on social media. And members of the public are advised to avoid any speculation at this time – both out in the community and online – that could jeopardise the live legal proceedings.

Officers have thanked those who have been in touch with information, and are still especially keen to hear from anyone else who may have CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage.
