Thomas Kain, 73, faces 12 counts of aggravated assault, 17 counts of endangerment and DUI in the slightest degree. Apache Junction police say that more charges will be filed as the investigation continues and the blood test results are obtained.“I haven’t seen anything like this here in Apache Junction,” Officer Darrin Hatch with Apache Junction Police said. “I’m just grateful that nobody is seriously hurt where life-threatening injuries are involved because that’s one of my biggest questions when I get to scenes like this.”Dozens of people were inside the lodge Saturday night when a 2004 Ford F-150 crashed through the wall. Police say 15 people were treated at the scene, and 10 other victims were hospitalized with injuries. In addition, five people drove themselves to nearby hospitals for minor injuries. One victim was reportedly unconscious and rushed into emergency surgery in critical condition. That person’s current condition is unknown.“We’ve got a great update today that she’s improving but still in the ICU. We’re very hopeful and thankful that she’s doing better,” Lieutenant Wes Kelley with Apache Junction PD said. The other victims have non-life-threatening injuries, ranging from deep cuts to broken bones.According to court documents, Kain told police he had been at the lodge since 5 p.m., saying he had six or seven beers and nothing to eat. He had reportedly ordered a meal to go and left around 8:30 p.m.Documents say he told police that when he got into his pickup, he set the food down on the passenger seat and the truck “took off full boar” before crashing into the lodge.Paperwork says an officer observed that Kain had bloodshot, watery eyes, and that he was staggering and unable to maintain balance without support. In addition, Kain reportedly had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. He was then arrested and booked into the Pinal County jail.
