The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said a prolific Daytona Beach drug dealer connected to multiple overdose death investigations is in custody.

On Aug. 10, officials said Chief Deputy Brian Henderson initiated a traffic stop on a car traveling 70 mph in the Holly Hill area. They said the car fled at high speeds with occupants tossing drugs out of the window, and for the safety of the general public, deputies decided not to engage in a high-speed pursuit.

Instead, Air One monitored from overhead and spotted the occupants of the vehicle abandoning it in Daytona Beach. Officials said that detectives were able to identify the driver as Shawn Adams, who had five prior convictions for fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer.

Adams, who had been released from state prison about two weeks before the incident, also held 48 prior felony charges with 20 convictions and 19 misdemeanor charges with six convictions, officials say.

These charges include trafficking and possession of drugs, grand theft of a motor vehicle, burglary, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
