D.C. police fatally shot a person Monday afternoon in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Southeast Washington, according to D.C. Police Chief Robert J. Contee III.

Contee said the shooting occurred about 4:30 p.m. as officers were serving a temporary protective order at a residence in the 1300 block of Congress Street SE. A protective order is issued by a judge to keep a person away from someone else.

In a video-recorded statement, Contee said that “at some point during this interaction between our officers and this person, there was some type of incident and this person ultimately was shot.”

The chief said additional information would be provided after officials view video from officers’ body-worn cameras. Contee did not describe what led up to the shooting or what prompted police to shoot. Contee also did not say if the person who was shot was armed.
