Several officers narrowly escaped injury after a Portland man in a stolen car rammed police vehicles during a chaotic incident on Thursday, the Tigard Police Department reports.

The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Richard Wilson from Portland, was apprehended on Monday afternoon in a Tigard neighborhood and faces 20 criminal charges.

Police say the incident began on October 24, when officers were sent to a report of a stolen car at the Tigard Walmart parking lot on SW Dartmouth Street.

The car had been stolen earlier that morning in a Portland burglary and was tracked to the Walmart location by its owner.

As plain-clothed detectives arrived, a man and woman exited the store and entered the stolen car.

Police say they tried to contain the vehicle using marked patrol cars, but the driver rammed several police cars and other parked vehicles. The suspect then reversed over a curb and fire hydrant, nearly hitting at least two officers, before leading police on a pursuit toward Portland on I-5.

The chase was called off shortly after for safety reasons.

In total, four police cars and two other vehicles were damaged, but no injuries were reported. The stolen car was recovered by Portland police the following day, and Wilson was identified as the suspect.

On October 28, Tigard police located Wilson near an apartment complex on SW Hunziker Road. Officers report he fled through a wooded area, but a K-9 team from Hillsboro police tracked him to a collapsed pop-up trailer in a backyard on SW Cherry Drive. After over an hour of negotiations involving the Washington County Tactical Negotiation Team and Crisis Negotiations Unit, Wilson surrendered and was arrested.
