Wednesday, the Fort Wayne Police Department released the bodycam footage that shows police shooting and killing a man who was found on the campus of Purdue University Fort Wayne in July. The man, identified by the coroner as 31-year-old Gawon Benson, had escaped custody in DeKalb County on July 30.Benson was believed to have found his way to a Fort Wayne apartment complex, and dispatchers alerted police that he was possibly armed with a handgun. Officers found him walking towards a parking lot on PFW’s campus and allegedly ignoring commands from police. In a voiceover at the beginning of the video, FWPD explains Benson was being tracked with an ankle monitor and that’s how authorities knew he was in the area.Police were also warned Benson may have had “a Glock 9-millimeter handgun in his possession that he previously stole from his ex-girlfriend,” FWPD said in the video. The first full minute of the footage shows multiple officers repeatedly telling Benson to put his hands up and drop what he’s holding. Police surround Benson as he stands still. Benson is then seen raising a gun and officers continually tell him to put it down as he starts walking.“The officer sees Gawon manipulate the slide of his handgun, and the officer discharges his weapon,” the video says.An officer shot Benson, who was pronounced dead at the scene.Investigators found a suicide note in Benson’s pocket.“This unfortunate incident appears to be a possible suicide-by-cop scenario,” police say in the video.Benson’s family viewed bodycam footage Tuesday before it was released to the public. One family member described the shooting as an “assassination” and “unjust.”“This time, there is no doubt that there was a murder that took place in our city of a young, Black man, and we want justice,” said Rev. Saharra Bledsoe, the president of the NAACP’s Fort Wayne chapter. “We demand justice.”FWPD said both an internal and criminal investigation will be reviewed by the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office.Campus police at PFW did not have body cameras. A spokesperson for PFW said cameras were ordered earlier this summer for University Police and they were delivered last week. The video ends with this message from FWPD: “Conclusions about whether the actions of the officer are consistent with department policy and law will not be made until all facts are known and the investigation is complete.”
