Police were called to Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue at 9:31AM on the 2nd of October 2025 after callers reported that pedestrians had been driven into, before an occupant exited the vehicle and began stabbing people.

Worshippers had gathered for a Yom Kippur service, which had begun at 9AM.

Firearms officers were deployed at 9:34AM, 3 minutes after the call out, as police received further reports that a security guard had been attacked with a knife.

Greater Manchester Police declared a major incident shortly before shots were fired by firearms officers at 9:38AM, killing a man believed to be the terrorist.

Paramedics arrived at 9:41AM and treated 4 members of the public for injuries caused by both the vehicle and stab wounds.

Around noon, a bomb disposal unit was deployed to the scene because police believed he was wearing a suicide belt.

Police stated they were unable to confirm whether the suspect was deceased until the investigation concluded.

Police presence was increased at every synagogue in the Greater Manchester area in the immediate aftermath of the attack.

At 9:37AM Greater Manchester Police initiated Operation Plato, a protocol used in response to suspected marauding terrorist attacks.

The incident was formally declared a terrorist attack later that day.

At 1:23PM, a loud controlled explosion was reported. Police say a loud noise heard at the scene of the attack was a result of specialist resources used to "gain entry to the suspect's vehicle as a precaution".

They say there is "no risk to the public and ongoing activity in relation to this major incident can be expected as we continue our enquiries".

People are advised to "avoid the area" and speak to police if they have any concerns.

The national head of counter-terrorist policing announced the attack was being treated as a terrorist incident, and that 2 people other than the assailant have been arrested.

3 people were confirmed dead following the attack, including the male suspect, who was shot by police.

5 people were injured, with 4 hospitalised in serious condition.
