Aserious case of abuse was exposed in the commune of Tirúa, Province of Arauco. A bedridden elderly woman with a severe disability was being assaulted by a woman hired by her family to take care of her.Ada Rebolledo Cifuentes (60) suffers from dementia, hydrocephalus and neurosisticercosis, in addition to three thrombosis and two paralysis. For 10 years she has been kept in bed and with permanent care.Ada had four children and raised them alone. Today they are the ones who strive to treat her as well as possible and among all of them they hired two caregivers, mainly for the hours they work. Two years ago the children of began to notice something strange with their mother. She “she began to be sad, fearful. She constantly felt pain in her scalp and various bruises, which we attributed to her prostrate condition. She even once had a broken finger, ”one of her sons, David Santos, told this outlet."But we blinded ourselves, we didn't want to think that something like this was happening," he explained, referring to possible mistreatment. They also did not get a response from her mother, due to her condition. “My mom forgets in a few minutes the things that are happening. When we ask her if she remembers if she was attacked, she says 'my head is so bad that I don't even remember who takes care of me,'” David recounted. However, suspicions grew and one day the children decided to take action. “We put up surveillance cameras to monitor in our absence and found out the worst.”Upon reviewing the recording, they found that one of the caregivers was physically and verbally assaulting her parent. In the images of her, it is seen how she pulls her hair repeatedly, while she orders him in a violent tone.“We reacted with sorrow, frustrated,” lamented David. They immediately cut off their relationship with the caregiver and reported what happened to the Carabineros, from where they forwarded the information to the Public Ministry. Now Ada's children are waiting for some news from the Prosecutor's Office and are seeking judicial support with the National Disability Service (Senadis). Meanwhile, they seek to publicly denounce what happened and raise awareness about the treatment given to the elderly and people with disabilities.
