The shooting happened around 8 p.m. after officers from the department's Fourth Division made a stop of a person in the 400 block of Roselane Street, according to LMPD Deputy Chief Col. Emily McKinley.

Police said 19-year-old Jeremiah Thompson was standing outside of a Kia Soul that had been reported stolen two days ago. When officers approached Thompson, he admitted to driving the vehicle.

LMPD Officers Brendan Koerner and Lazman Acharya were the two officers shot during the attempted arrest.

Koerner is still at UofL Hospital after having surgery on his right hand. Acharya was shot in the leg but is now recovering at home.

Koerner has been with LMPD for six years, and Acharya has been with the department for three years.

Video shows police on top of Thompson while he's on the ground. He kept telling officers that he didn't do anything and was confused about what was happening.

As police tried to detain him, he resisted. LMPD said the officers were shot while trying to gain control of his hands when Thompson was laying on the ground.

After a shot was fired, Thompson was stood up and he yelled out how his hand was shot then police put him back on the ground.
