Tempe, Arizona police pull over a suspected gang leader and block him in off the freeway after about 15 minutes the police come to the car door asking him to exit the car.

A man has died after a shooting involving a DPS trooper on a busy East Valley freeway on Sunday morning. He’s been identified as 44-year-old Lemonte Anthony Knobelock of Mesa.

Around 2 a.m., a trooper located a driver parked on the shoulder of Loop 101 just south of University Drive. Authorities say the vehicle matched a description that was recently reported for erratic driving.

According to Sgt. Eric Andrews, with DPS, a trooper attempted to speak with the driver, who refused to follow commands and barricaded himself in his car. Roughly 30 minutes later, Andrews said the man pulled out a handgun, which is when the trooper-involved shooting happened. Firefighters pronounced Knobelock dead at the scene.
