The incident took place in Ibura, in the South Zone of Recife, on the morning of this Thursday (9). A man died while catching a 'bigu' on a Metropolitana bus Reproduction/WhatsApp A 22-year-old man died on the morning of this Thursday (9) after colliding with an electricity pole while catching a "bigu" on a bus — which is when people hang on the doors and windows of the buses to "hitch a ride" on the moving vehicle According to the Union of Passenger Transport Companies of Pernambuco (Urbana-PE), the accident happened on Avenida Bom Jesus, in Ibura, a neighborhood in the South Zone of Recife. The bus belonged to the Metropolitana company and ran the "Zumbi do Pacheco/Tancredo Neves" route. The victim was identified only as Carlos André. After the collision, the bus driver called the authorities and a Metropolitana supervisor went to the scene. According to Urbana, all of the vehicle's side windows and front windows were stoned while the forensic team from the Criminalistics Institute (IC) was on its way to the scene. Information is circulating on social media that this happened because residents questioned why the driver did not stop the vehicle and force the young man to get out. In a statement, Urbana regretted the incident and said that it “has been promoting educational and awareness campaigns and actions on the correct boarding procedure and safety standards for public transportation, including awareness-raising actions on the risks of hanging on the sides and bumpers of buses or walking on the roofs of vehicles.” G1 also contacted the Military Police and the Civil Police to find out more details about the incident and whether the bus driver gave a statement, but had not received a response by the time this report was last updated
