On Tuesday afternoon, November 14th, there was a serious incident in the pedestrian zone of downtown Gummersbach. A 30-year-old man injured a police officer in the face with a knife. This attack followed an incident in which the man was being checked at a nearby supermarket on suspicion of robbery.

In response to the attack, emergency services opened fire on the suspect, who was then hit several times. His health condition is described as critical. During this incident, a 43-year-old bystander was also shot in the thigh. Both injured people were immediately taken to hospital.

The investigation into the incident was taken over by the Cologne Police Department's Criminal Investigation Department 11 to ensure neutrality. The public prosecutor's office and the police have announced that they will only release further information after the existing video recordings of the incident have been evaluated and further interviews are still pending.
