I have several stories, including the injury that ended my police career, tucked away in my fetid brain.
When I have run out of stories, I will close strong with some shootings I was involved in and some of the injuries I sustained as a cop. I have written two books. One is about a Reserve cop that is a mortician. The other is about a cop in the city I worked most of my career in. Both are "fictional" and I am working with a publisher on the first one. I have also been approached to write a screen play based on the first book that they may turn into a movie.
The Mortuary related stuff isn't that interesting to me. No car chases, shootings or the real exciting stuff. I know my fellow Kaotics are into the gore, so I write about that more often. There are some serious cop haters out in Kaotic land too.
Since I recovered from my stabbing and resultant massive staph infection, I have done a lot of Executive Protection (high class body guard). For the last six years, I have been a civilian contractor with the US Marshal's Service. So, it ain't ghetto rock 'em sock 'em police work but it has it's moments.

From the age of 17, until a stabbing ended my career in Law Enforcement at 54, I was neck deep in death, gut, gore and violence on an almost daily basis. As you can tell by my stories here in Kaotic, I have quite a memory for all of the nastiness I was involved in.
During all of that time, I never lost a minute of sleep over anything I saw or did. The shootings were all justified by numerous investigations. The resultant death threats caused me concern for my family and my property, but no one ever followed up on the threats. I never had nightmares or bad dreams about my work.
I think some people are cut out for certain types of work. I couldn't sit in an accountant's office and crunch numbers or work as a waiter. In the years since police work, I have done a lot of executive protection and high end security. Sometimes, sitting for hours in a surveillance vehicle or watching Saudi Princes spending money, drives me nuts.
To answer your question. I remember things that stand out in my careers, some things with vivid clarity. But nothing I have done yet has had lasting effects on my brain. One thing I do retain is how cheap life is. I have seen people murdered in the most vicious ways over a pair of Jordans or $20 worth of crack. The waste of human life has stayed with me. Let me know if this answers your question. I have reduced my work schedule and have lots of time to write......
