The ethnic European and African history of this part of North Carolina spans more than two and a half centuries.

The first permanent European settlement in the area did not come until the 1720's when English colonists began settling in the area. They imported Africans as slave laborers.

Most new settlers arrived from the northern colonies, the West Indies, and the British Isles. Most of the settlers were indentured servants—mainly of European origin. The colonists also imported an increasing number of African slaves . By 1767, slaves accounted for more than 62% of the population . Many worked in the port as laborers, and some in ship-related trades and in the fields.

*Please let it be noted that I am NOT condoning slavery or making fun of anything or anyone. I am only sharing a little bit of my State's history.
