The Look of "Death" Red eyes, painless with normal vision - part of the clinical plethora of traumatic asphyxia (subconjunctival hemorrhage). An elephant wrapped its trunk around this man's chest and tried to crush him - fortunately he survived this attack. Traumatic asphyxia, also known as Perthes syndrome, is a serious medical condition that occurs when sudden, intense pressure on the chest obstructs normal blood flow. This pressure can cause blood to back up in the upper areas of the body, including the face, neck, and arms. It is important to note that traumatic asphyxia is most often caused by accidents where a large amount of weight suddenly presses on a person's chest. Such situations can arise, for example, from car accidents, landslides or heavy objects falling on someone. The symptoms of traumatic asphyxia are often immediately apparent. These include bruising or cyanosis (bluishness of the skin), swollen lips and eyelids, and bleeding from the nose and mouth. People may also have difficulty breathing and may experience pain and loss of consciousness. Treatment of traumatic asphyxia primarily focuses on stabilizing the patient and assisting in breathing. This may require artificial respiration. Subsequently, the underlying injuries that caused the condition must be treated.
