A story by Charredtorso

During my tenure as an embalming chemical and mortuary supply salesman, my travels took me to a small town in rural Arizona. I walked into the funeral home and caught the owner wringing his hands.
"None of my workers are answering their phones and I have a Coroner's case to respond to here in town...." "I'll go with you..."

Minutes later, we rolled up to the rear of a small restaurant in town and met with the Sheriff's Deputy.
The Deputy said that he was fresh out of the Academy and had no death investigation experience. He also said that the rest of the deputies and the brass from the town's sub-station were at a conference in Tucson for the day. The undertaker volunteered that I was an investigator with the L.A. County Coroner. The young deputy asked me if I would help him. "Sure, what have you got?"

A waitress from the restaurant lived in a very small trailer parked behind the diner. Her boss tried to get her to respond, because she was late for work. With the deputy there, the owner used his key to the trailer and they saw the woman was dead.

The trailer had been locked from the inside and the owner had to retrieve the key to the trailer from a hook in the diner. I found the woman on her left side, with a 22 caliber Colt pistol clutched tightly in her hand. She held the gun so tightly that the Colt emblem was imprinted in the palm of her right hand. I located a single gun shot wound to her right temple. The tiny trailer didn't show any indication of a struggle, so it appeared to be a straight up suicide.

I went in to the cafe, with the deputy and interviewed the owner. The waitress had been despondent over a child custody issue and was deeply depressed. She had worked 12 hours the day before and he saw her walk out and get in her trailer. The boss noted that she didn't have a boyfriend and he had absolutely no romantic interest in her.

I asked for two take out bags and we went back to the trailer. I wrapped the hands in the bags, in case they wanted to do a gun shot residue test on her later and we removed the woman to the Funeral Home.

Then, I spent an hour coaching the young deputy on the report. It was probably the most detailed suicide report/investigation Cochise County Arizona had ever seen. I wrote it like it was going to be reviewed by the Supreme Court, using terminology a lot of Homicide Investigators haven't heard. I didn't want to leave any gap that could get the cop in trouble or get me summoned back to Arizona for an inquest.

The deputy was grinning ear to ear. The Undertaker offered to buy me breakfast. "No thanks, I hear the service at the diner is going to be slow today....."
